Chris Galgay

Chris Galgay has been serving as a Trustee on the MEABT for almost eight years.  He also has been serving as president of the Maine Education Association for the past four years and before that as MEA vice-president.  Chris’ journey into the education took him on a long and winding path.

His first step on his career ladder was when he went to work for New England Telephone in 1971.  Over the next decade and a half Chris worked as a school bus driver, a truck driver, an interstate bus driver and other jobs as well.  In 1985 he moved to Maine and finally decided it was time to pursue his dream to teach.

While acquiring his teaching credential at USM,  Chris once again drove a school bus, first in Portland and then in Windham.

Chris began his teaching career as a first grade teacher at the Hartford-Sumner Elementary School in 1992. Over the years he taught in grades 1- 4.   He continued teaching at Hartford-Sumner until 2006 when he was elected President of the MEA.   During his years at the school Chris was heavily involved in the local association, serving as President and chief negotiator for all the employees.

During his extensive working career Chris has been a member of many unions, and it was always apparent to him that affordable and quality health insurance was one of the highest priorities for the employees he worked with and represented. As a Trustee on the MEABT, Chris has had the pleasure and honor to continue the work of making sure that the education employees in our schools, as well as our retired educators, have a quality health plan at an affordable price.
