Susan Grondin received a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies from the University of Maine Orono and a Master's Degree in Exceptionality from the University of Southern Maine. She began her career in education as an educational technician and long term substitute prior to accepting a position at Lewiston Middle School (LMS) teaching social studies. “I entered LMS in the middle of the school year. I have remained on the same team and in the same room for over thirty years, but currently teach Language Arts. Last year I began to clean out my files to make room for new materials. I still had purple masters and laughed when I thought of how far we have come in the area of technology.” Susan is also an intramural aide and can be found teaching students archery or refereeing a variety of sports like floor hockey.
As an MEA member Susan has held several positions at either the local, state, or national level. “Being involved in MEA activities 'feeds my soul'. She enjoys meeting educators across the state and nation and working to support the issues that affect all of us in and out of the classroom.
Eleven years ago Susan decided to seek a Trustee position with the MEA Benefits Trust. She reports that she is very proud of the work of the MEABT Trustees, employees, and consultants in negotiating a quality health care plan for our 25,000 members and their families. The trustees believe in wellness programs and other opportunities for our members to access information, and in recent years they have implemented several programs. MEABT members can look forward to more wellness initiatives over the next year.
During her free time, you will find Susan reading a book, cooking, completing house projects, traveling, or enjoying activities with her family and friends.
Susan reminds us that taking care of ourselves is also very important. “Remember to find a few moments each day to think of the positives in your life. It is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself.”
