Susan Grondin - Secretary

This is the third in our series highlighting our Trustees.

Susan Grondin received a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies from the University of Maine Orono and a Master's Degree in Exceptionality from the University of Southern Maine. She began her career in education as an educational technician and long term substitute prior to accepting a position at Lewiston Middle School (LMS) teaching social studies. “I entered LMS in the middle of the school year.  I have remained on the same team and in the same room for over thirty years, but currently teach Language Arts. Last year I began to clean out my files to make room for new materials. I still had purple masters and laughed when I thought of how far we have come in the area of technology.”

Do You Know How to be a Good Healthcare Consumer?
Joe Knows, and Now You Can Too!

Sharon Beaulieu, Benefits Manager

The MEA Benefits Trust is pleased to introduce “Your Guide to Buying Healthcare”.   Your Guide to Buying Healthcare is a series of videos that follow the adventures of Joe – a nice guy, but a slightly befuddled healthcare consumer.  With the help of his neighbor John, he tackles some of the most common health care issues, such as understanding bills and insurance paperwork, choosing the right plan and doctor, getting the best care for the money, comparing prescriptions for effectiveness and cost, and much more.

All members of the MEABT health plan and dependants can view these videos online, free of charge, thanks to our partnership with the Maine Health Management Coalition.  Each video contains helpful hints and interactive, entertaining tools for making better healthcare decisions.  Laugh while you learn!

To find the videos, go to MHMC and click on the link for the Consumer Videos, under member pages. Our username and password are both: MEABT

Eating Right for a Healthy Weight
By Mary Doyle, RN, MA
Wellness Director

Achieving and maintaining a healthier weight will contribute to your overall health and well being.  The following tips from the American Dietetic Association are for adults who want to make changes in their lifestyle and move toward a healthier weight.

Start with a Plan

Develop a plan for lifelong health, not just short-term weight loss. Don’t lose sight of the big picture: achieving overall good health. By putting more emphasis on your health, experts agree that you can raise your overall self-esteem, resulting in healthy eating, weight loss and improved health.  Set healthy, realistic goals. When you make changes step-by-step and set realistic goals, you are more likely to succeed in reaching them. Start with two or three specific, small changes at a time. Track your progress by keeping a food and activity log.
