LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

On the Road
By Allan E. Goodman

A few weeks ago, I took part in a meeting convened by the National Academies Committee on Science, Technology and Law to address pressing issues in these fields. My panel addressed the internationalization of U.S. research universities. Today, these universities host 60% of the nation’s international students, and are home to nearly all of the international scholars who come to this country. More than half of all international students in U.S. universities are enrolled in the STEM fields, and last year, foreign graduates received 54% of all the PhDs in Physics and 64% in Computer Sciences.

Yet surprisingly few research universities make “international” a central part of what it means to become educated. Few require study abroad and most no longer require the study of a foreign language for entry. A decade ago, most U.S. university leaders were not even speaking about the importance of international education and few undergraduates at leading research universities were studying abroad. We have come far since then, and I applaud those who are leading the way. But many universities are still in the early stages of internationalization, and more forward looking policies are needed to make sure our students are prepared to be global citizens.

I encourage you to join me in making ‘international’ a part of everyone’s education.
